If you love quality sashimi, Too Yumm Sashimi hits the spot with its Japanese-style rice bowls topped with fresh seafood. The brand has been around as a wholesaler for some time now, before opening its first cafe at GMBB KL in 2023.

Seating is limited, so expect to wait during peak times, especially over the weekends. The space is cosy and warm, with Japanese-inspired decor – from the beautifully illustrated fabric dividers over the entrance, to the cute stuffed toys and decorative items peppering the interiors.

Too Yumm’s signatures are their salmon bowls, but they have a solid selection of cooked items too, such as curry rice, smoked duck bowl, and tom yum noodles. As for drinks, matcha is their specialty, albeit on the pricey end (averaging RM15++, but it’s imported from Japan).

Being a creature of habit, I ordered the same item for all my visits: the Salmon + Ama Ebi Bowl (RM48), which features thick, buttery slices of raw salmon and sweet shrimp atop a bed of warm rice seasoned with furikake.

Fortunately, the quality and portion was consistent on all occasions: I have read reviews that complain about ‘small’ portion size, but this is just right for my appetite, and in my opinion, worth the price paid for the quality.

The bowl also comes topped with a pasteurised egg yolk – just look at that gorgeous glisten. Breaking it apart and mixing it with the rest of the ingredients lends the bowl a silken, creamy texture. Dip the seafood into the accompanying shoyu (soy sauce) to bring out its natural sweetness and umami.

For something simpler, there’s the Salmon Don (RM38). There are other combinations too, such as salmon with ikura (salted salmon roe), scallops, engawa (flatfish fin), and uni (sea urchin). The “Salmon Noodles” dish is a novelty, where they shape salmon sashimi into long strips resembling noodles.

For those who prefer cooked options, there’s the Salmon Avo Bowl, which brims with generous portions of creamy avocado, mango, and grilled salmon. The beautiful colours make for great photos and they are a feast for the eyes as much as the stomach.

Another dish I recommend is the Salmon Ochazuke, comprising chunks of cooked salmon, rice topped with ikura, egg, and seaweed. It is served with a pot containing warm dashi (broth), which you’re supposed to pour over the rice. If that sounds warm and comforting, that’s because it is, and the dashi is light enough that it doesn’t overpower the taste of the salmon.

Side item: Marinated Jellyfish. Equal parts crunchy and chewy, clean tasting.

Since the store specialises in matcha I ordered a Strawberry Matcha the first time around. It was not too sweet, which is great, but matcha sometimes has this powdery texture which I’m not keen on, so this was just okay for me. They also serve iced coffee.

Service on all visits has been eager to please, although it can be a bit slow at times. Everything else is five stars in my book.
