Fancy cafes may pull in customers with their aesthetics, but it is usually the shops that serve comfy, everyday fare that tend to have more longevity.

Sanxii Claypot seems to fall squarely in the latter category. This casual restaurant, which has several branches in the Klang Valley, specialises in Cantonese-style claypot dishes, with a couple of Sichuanese offerings thrown in. While they are still fairly new in Puchong, they always seem to be packed with lunch and dinner crowds, especially on the weekends.

The interiors aren’t fancy – sort of like an elevated zhap fan joint, but cosy enough for a relaxing meal. Good news for carb lovers: the rice here is refillable ! (and quite affordably priced at just RM2).

The signature dish here is the Guangdong Sizzling Boneless Chicken Thigh, which is served piping hot and sizzling. It even comes with a little flag pronouncing the award it received from the Malaysia Book of Records.
The portion is fair – if you’re a big eater then you might want to have this solo, but I was good to share this with N, complemented by another dish. Since only thigh meat was used, the chicken remained juicy and tender, slathered in a savoury medley of onions, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and scallions. I enjoyed picking out the slightly charred, fatty bits of skin that clung to the claypot’s surface. It’s a great companion to rice – so that’s when the unlimited refill comes in handy!

One of the more affordable options on the menu is the Minced Meat Tofu (RM12) which is good for two. The consistency was on the watery side, but the flavours were there and the eggy, bouncy tofu was a comforting side to rice, topped with bits of minced meat.

To wrap up the meal on a sweet note, we got the brown sugar glutinous rice cakes, which were deep fried to golden perfection with a crisp exterior. The cakes are served fresh from the fryer, so be careful when biting into them lest you burn your tongue on the brown sugar filling. I was expecting it to be very sweet but the flavour was surprisingly balanced, and the treat didn’t feel heavy or greasy despite being fried.

Overall, the food at Sanxii feels comforting and tasty, and is a good choice if you’re craving something homely. Prices are affordable, especially if you’re sharing, with main dishes going for about RM12 – RM30. Some of their other bestsellers include the Chopped Chilli Fish Slices, Oil-Splashed Boiled Sliced Pork, Garlic Seafood Vermicilli, and Pickled Cabbage Chilli Fish.
