One of the fondest food memories I have of my student days in the UK is of tucking into a full English breakfast for the first time. Famished after arriving in Sheffield after a 20-hour journey, I had a fry-up at the local Yates (a branch of Britain’s oldest pub chain), polishing off the massive platter of fat sausages, back bacon, eggs, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, and baked beans with relish.

It has been 15 years since. Now that I’m much older and my metabolism slower, I can no longer repeat my epicurean feats of yore. Still, there are times when I really want authentic British food – and when that happens, there is Sausage KL Cafe & Deli to fulfill those cravings.

Nestled within a nostalgic hotel and service residence called Holiday Place Ampang, the homely cafe, which seats around 30, is run by British owner Matt Kerr, who has lived in Kuala Lumpur for over 20 years. Matt and his Indonesian wife Nova found it difficult to find good, meaty sausages in KL and started making their own at home. They proved so popular that the couple decided to start their own business – culminating in the opening of Sausage KL Cafe and Deli in 2018.

No brownie points for guessing what Sausage KL specialises in: if the menu doesn’t, then the big freezer close to the hotel-side entrance will. It is stocked with a variety of homemade meats and sausages – which the cafe proudly states is free of preservatives and made with 100% natural hog casing – so if something catches your fancy while dining at the cafe, you can purchase the links to enjoy at home.

Some of the flavours on offer include the traditional Lincolnshire (with sage, nutmeg, coriander, and black pepper), Cumberland, bratwurst, and Italian. You can also get back bacon and other homemade goodies like hash browns and pork patties.

We walked in close to noon and while there wasn’t a long queue, limited tables meant it took a long time for us to be seated, so I recommend booking in advance. Since the sausages are cooked to order, there was a further wait. All in all it took about 1.5 hours from the time we arrived to the time we were served.

I can kind of understand why people were reluctant to vacate their seats, though. The cosy interiors are illuminated by natural sunlight, which gives the space a homely, relaxed vibe.

The All-Day Breakfast menu is, naturally, meat heavy, with options such as The Big Breakfast, the Scottish, the American, and the Full English. You can also Build Your Own Platter, or go for lighter bites such as Banana Pancakes, English Breakfast Muffin, Smoked Duck Sandwich, and Breakfast Croissant.

N went all in with The Big Breakfast (RM35), which lived up to its name. The platter consisted of two thick cuts of toast and butter, a plump sausage, grilled tomatoes, crispy hashbrown, back bacon slices, sunny side up egg, sauteed button mushrooms, and his all-time favourite, baked beans. Everything was done well, but the highlight was definitely the sausage, which was perfectly grilled, juicy, and packed with flavour.

I tried the Lorne Sausage and Mash (RM30). This traditional Scottish breakfast staple, made with a mix of pork, beef and breadcrumbs, does not have regular sausage casing and looks more like a square, minced meat patty. It had an interesting texture and taste – I could taste a sharp blend of spices like nutmeg and coriander, and while there was a slight crispiness and char to the exterior, the inside was soft. The mash was creamy and smooth, and the flavour of the onion gravy was also balanced and brought everything together.

I also added an order of blood pudding. This is extremely rare to see in KL (I believe Sausage KL is the only restaurant that makes it here). As the name suggests, it is made of animal blood (in this case, pork) and fat mixed with cereal as its binding agent.

Texture wise, it resembles a crumbly muffin, with a mushy, doughy centre. If you like liver, then this should be right up your alley, as it has a hint of coppery earthiness. Pair it with malt vinegar if the pudding starts feeling a little too greasy.

The coffee at Sausage KL is decent too. It was too early in the day for us to be having alcohol, but the cafe also serves beers for patrons who wish to pair it with their meaty mains.

Service may have been a bit slow, but it was friendly. Food is great and reasonably priced, considering the quality. Will definitely come back for more sausages!
