Good food is sometimes worth suffering for.

Which is why the horrendous parking at Lucky Garden, Bangsar felt like a small price to pay in exchange for our meal at Wurst – a neighbourhood deli specialising in artisanal sausages (wurst is German for ‘sausage’), quality meats, and other European delights such as paella and pasta.

The restaurant is actually not new – it was formerly located at the basement of MOV Hotel in Bukit Bintang, before moving to its current location in 2022. That hasn’t stopped loyal fans of chef-proprietor Logan Lopez from patronising the establishment, especially over Friday evenings and weekends, when reservations are recommended.

Occupying just three quarters of a shoplot, the restaurant is compact and cosy, with colourful murals adorning the walls and a cheeky neon sign proclaiming Love at Wurst Sight. Orders can be made manually at the counter, where you can choose from a selection of homemade sausages on display.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the sausages were reasonably priced, starting from just RM10.90. There was a good selection of international flavours, from Uruguay Longaniza to Brazilian Calebrasa.

For something heartier, the restaurant also sells premium meat cuts like Angus oysterblade, Mangalica Pork Chop (widely touted as the world’s best tasting pork), and Mottainai, also known as the ‘wagyu’ of lamb.

Meat may be the star, but there are other options on the menu too. Pair your meal with carbs (the paella is a specialty) like pasta, pizza, soups, and sides like grilled chards and sauteed mushrooms.

What goes well with sausages and steak? The restaurant’s curated wine list features some pretty interesting vintages – and if you’re feeling adventurous, they also carry drinks like Sarawakian tuak.

On our first visit, we tried four flavours: the Brazilian Calebrasa, Galangal Wild Boar, Smoked Bacon, and Uruguay Longaniza. Each order of sausages comes with a side of pickles and mustard, a wine reduction sauce, and a Sarawak white pepper sauce.

It sounds indecent but cutting into the Brazilian actually caused the juices within to squirt all over the table – that’s how juicy it was. The sausage was packed with ground meat, with the garlic and paprika flavours shining through.

Everything was excellent, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would be the galangal wild boar. The meat was paler and had a mushier texture, with a peppery kick from the galangal. The smoked bacon wurst is a reliable choice if you’re looking for traditional flavours, while the Uruguay Longaniza has a mild sweetness thanks to anise.

The sausages can be quite filling on their own, but for those who must have their carbs, I recommend the truffle tortellini. It was creamy without being cloying – and acted sort of like a palate cleanser in between the sausages. Each parcel also brimmed with earthy mushrooms, and had a satisfying thickness and bite to them. We mopped up the cream sauce til the plate was clean.

After such an impressive first visit, N and I actually returned the following week on a Friday evening. The restaurant was much busier on our second visit, but the staff were very accommodating and set up a table for us outside on the five-foot walkway.

This time around, we tried a few more flavours, including the Massaman Thai, the Iberico La Mostaza, and the Argentinian Chorizo. They were good, especially the Massaman Thai which had a strong taste of lemongrass, reminiscent of the sausages you get from night markets, but juicier and fatter, with a more pronounced pork flavour. Another new dish we tried was the Truffle Aligot (mashed potato with cheese) which had just the right balance of chewiness and creaminess.

We also reordered the Brazilian Calebrasa, but it was, unfortunately, dry. We put this down to the crowd and the higher number of orders, which probably affected the heat of the grill – in comparison to our first visit when we were basically the first customers of the day. The Galangal Wild Boar, however, was still great and I can see this being my regular order whenever I visit the restaurant.

While the deli is casual, the food is truly good and the service attentive. If you’re craving something meaty, rich, and umami – Wurst is truly the best you can get in the neighbourhood.
