The traffic/parking in Bandar Puteri Puchong is, as the French would say, tres mal — which is why I don’t venture there if I can help it. Unfortunately, most of the banks are also there – which is how the Hubs and I ended up at Ming Kee Cantonese for lunch after running some errands. This is a branch of the famous porridge place in SS2 and it’s fairly new, having opened less than a year ago.

The interior is cosy and air-conditioned, featuring a grey colour scheme meant to emulate unpolished concrete (it’s actually wallpaper) with wood panel flooring. One section of the restaurant is an open kitchen where you can see the staff prepping your food.

Despite being a weekday and there being multiple offices around the area, there wasn’t much of a lunch crowd, but that’s a good thing coz it meant we could dine in peace lol.

Ming Kee specialises in porridge, but N and I both wanted something more substantial so we went for the roast duck wonton noodles. I was surprised at how large the portion was, with a generous serving of duck sitting atop a mound of noodles. It also came with sides of bamboo shoots, vegetables, and a bowl of soup.

Duck can be hard to get right, since it has a gamier taste than other types of poultry. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ming Kee’s version is pretty good. Compared to other places that sell roast duck, theirs has a stronger herbal taste. I also liked the skin, which was slightly crispy, but balanced by a good amount of chew from the fat layer underneath. The noodles were good too, with minimal gan sui (lye) taste.

Aside from their porridge and barbecue rice/noodle options, Ming Kee offers a couple of interesting Cantonese dishes you don’t often see in many establishments, like this marinated jellyfish appetiser. Again, the portion was quite substantial. I was expecting something along the lines of what you get in yee sang or Japanese restaurants, but the jellyfish had a surprisingly crunchy texture, almost like wood ear fungus. While decent enough, I wish it had more depth of flavour, as all I could taste was salt and spiciness.

A quick and satisfying lunch in a comfortable setting, done! Prices are okay considering the area, averaging between RM13 to RM20 for most of the mains.
