It has been awhile since I last had dimsum, but when the Hubs and I went to our usual joint for breakfast, recently, the place seems to have closed down. We thought of going to the famous Foo Hing Dim Sum nearby – thinking it would not be as busy on a Friday morning – but it was just as crowded as it is on weekends lol.
I still wanted to get my dimsum fix – and thankfully, if there’s one thing Puchong has no shortage of, it’s dim sum restaurants. A short drive across the main thoroughfare and we were at Jin Xuan Hong Kong Dimsum. They have multiple branches across Malaysia and although they’re not my first choice due to their smaller portions (in comparison to my usual place), they maintain a consistent quality throughout their outlets.

This is my first time at the Puchong branch. The restaurant is spacious, with marble top tables and wooden chairs typical of Hong Kong dim sum joints. They don’t have the old-school push carts, but orders can be made via chit. Service during our visit was excellent, attentive, and polite.

Jin Xuan offers an extensive menu of steamed and fried items. Of course, staples such as har gao, siew mai, and char siew bao are a must. You can get heavier dishes as well as such as steamed rice rolls and congee.

The fried and baked menu.

Steamed items are prepared to order, so they might take some time to get to your table.
I got a shrimp chee cheong fun as my main, while N had the char siew bao (BBQ pork bun). We also got a couple of items to share, including a basket of siew mai and a plate of fried salad shrimp dumpling.

The rice rolls were nice and chewy on the outside, with a decent amount of fresh, bouncy shrimp on the inside. The mild soy sauce enhanced the flavour of the rolls and seafood, while a side of sambal and chilli added extra kick.

N enjoyed his char siew bao, which he said is close to the ones served at Foh San, his favourite dim sum place in Ipoh. The version here does not use much Chinese parsley in the filling, but just enough to give it a slight sharpness, so it was okay for me. Some places load the filling with Chinese parsley, which I hate as the aldehyde in the parsley causes me to have a gag reflex lol.

The siew mai was sizeable, with a good pork meat to shrimp ratio, wrapped in a sweetish wonton wrapper. The filling had good flavour, elevated when dipped in chilli sauce.

The fried items were good as well. The beancurd rolls were on the slim side, but they were crispy and moist with plump pieces of shrimp enveloped within. The fried salad shrimp dumplings were a bit more oily, but they went well with the slightly tangy mayo.
The dimsum items at Jin Xuan are priced from RM6.50 onwards, which I think is quite standard for most dim sum restaurants in the Klang Valley. One plus point about Jin Xuan is that they open until night, which is not the norm for other places, since dim sum is usually breakfast/brunch food.
