Nothing beats a warm bowl of porridge in cold weather – and with the recent rainy spell, now’s a good time to head to Yee Kee Porridge in Puchong. Spanning two shoplots, the restaurant has ample space for families looking to enjoy a comforting meal.

Despite its modern look, the Yee Kee brand actually started off as a humble stall in a wet market back in 1975. They’ve since upscaled and expanded, with four outlets under their belt. Aside from poriddge, they offer dishes with Hakka and Cantonese influences as well, such as vinegar pork trotters, yellow wine braised chicken, and ginger paste frog.

The fam and I opted for individual servings so we could try a variety of different toppings. I’m a big fan of the pig innards porridge, as I like the different textures: there’s the satisyfing crunch you get from the deep-fried intestines, the sponginess of the blood cubes and the liver, and the velvety creaminess of the porridge — all of which come together in perfect harmony. You can add a dash of sesame oil and soy sauce for extra flavour, but I think it tastes good enough as is!

N opted for a classic poriddge of salted egg with deep fried meatballs. This is another winning combo, as the egg yolk’s concentrated saltiness is offset by the porridge’s blandness.

The Bro had the Fish Porridge, which came with generous chunks of dory fish fillet, lightly battered then deep fried to a golden crisp. If you’re a small eater, I think their single servings are even good enough for two.

Surprisingly, the person who likes porridge the most (ie the mum) went for the Sesame Oil Frog instead, which she paired with rice.

For those who have never tried frog, the idea of eating one can seem offputting – especially if you’re visualising the image of a frog — but most restaurants typically use just the legs, and they chop them up into small pieces, so they look like tiny pieces of chicken. The meat tastes similar to chicken as well, with a smooth texture akin to the thigh or wing part. In fact, these edible bullfrogs are called “tin kai” in Chinese, or literally ‘field chicken’.

Everything we ordered during our visit to Yee Kee Porridge hit the mark in terms of flavour, and service was good as well. Granted, their prices are a little above average, but if the quality remains consistent, I look forward to trying out their other dishes next time.
