The Hubs and I often have brunch together before heading to work – our favourite haunt being SS2’s Soon Hing BBQ, because its relatively close to our offices and the dishes are affordable. But although the food there is consistently good, we were getting bored of eating the same things every week – so we decided to switch it up one day by trying Tang Pin Kitchen, which is located just a few shops away along the same row.

The kopitiam has an old-school vibe, with marble tables and heavy wooden chairs. The ceiling is low and looks like asbestos, paired with white fluorescent lights (the style actually reminds me of the old Hong Kong char chan tengs of the 1980s and 1990s).

Tang Pin specializes in Teochew noodle dishes, specifically fish ball noodles and mee pok, a springy noodle usually served tossed in a sauce and with minced meat. There are other Malaysian breakfast items available as well. Can’t go wrong with half boiled eggs – seasoned with soy sauce and pepper – and a polo bun with thick slabs of butter in between!

Frothy Hainanese tea with lots of milk.

N ordered their signature mee pok. It came with a generous dollop of minced meat topped with deep fried lard cubes (for added fragrance + it adds an extra layer of silkiness to the noodles). The flavours of Tang Pin’s mee pok are quite subtle, so if you have a heavy palate, this might taste a little bland – but it was well balanced for me.

The curry chee cheong fun was a bit disappointing despite its large portion, as the curry was too watery for my liking. I give this a so-so.
Prices are okay considering its in the PJ area, food is decent, and the servers are quite friendly. A good place for a hearty brunch or breakfast!
