Puchong is known as dim sum haven, and at one point, there were nearly a dozen (!) establishments spread across the city. While this number has dwindled, especially after the pandemic, every now and then a new restaurant opens, trying to make its mark in a highly competitive space.

One of these newer kids on the block is Restoran Dim Sum (how’s that for SEO?), tucked within the busy commercial area of Bandar Puchong Jaya. Parking here can be a pain, though – so is the food and experience worth the hassle?

the space

Many dim sum restaurants in Puchong usually occupy corner lots and span two floors. Restoran Dim Sum, however, is quite modest, seating 40 people max. Because of the space constraint, it doesn’t feel like a spot to linger and chitchat over tea. The interiors, too, are simple and no frills, with minimal decor and a plain colour scheme.

the menu

There is a decent selection to choose from, covering the classics, ie the customary har gao, siew mai, steamed chicken feet, lor mai gai (chicken glutinous rice) and a variety of bao. The cheong fun (rice rolls) are also recommended, with a few sweet items to round off the meal.

the food

The Hong Kong-style shrimp rice roll here comes with green ‘skin’, which is pretty unique. In terms of taste, however, I did not detect any difference from the regular version. The texture is thicker and chewier, so it will appeal to diners who prefer more bite, and the shrimps inside are sizeable too. All in all, a decent plate of chee cheong fun. Another one you might want to try is the rice roll with omelette, which is not always offered at other dim sum joints.

Nothing to fault with the steamed items. The har gao skin is expertly pleated, chewy but not too thick, and stuffed with bouncy prawns. The fish balls have great bite with no overwhelmingly fishy odour, just the clean taste of seafood; and the siew mai has a balanced ratio between shrimp and pork, encased in a sweetish egg wrapper.

The deep fried radish cakes are a tad salty, but otherwise executed well. The thin layer of batter on the outside gives it extra crispiness.

Last but not least, the salad prawns are fried to golden perfection, and again, stuffed with sizeable crustaceans. Personally, I prefer the ones served elsewhere, since Restoran Dim Sum includes parsley in their version, but if you like the herb, these will do nicely.

Verdict: Restoran Dim Sum serves up solid renditions of classic dim sum staples. Everything is done well, and in ample portions, although seasoning leans a bit heavy at times. If you would like to try an alternative to Foo Hing Dim Sum or Jin Xuan Hong Kong, this place is worth checking out.
