As a self-professed fried chicken connoisseur, Borenos has been on my list of places to try for awhile now. Founded in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in 2015, the chain opened its first outlet in Peninsular Malaysia last year, much to the delight of Sabahans living and working in KL but craving a taste of home.

The Puchong outlet is clean and spacious, with a green and yellow colour scheme that evokes a warm atmosphere. They even have their own jingle, which is honestly a bop. I also like that they incorporated East Malaysian motifs into their decorations.

The restaurant specialises in fried chicken, but like most fast food brands, offers other items as well such as burgers and even fish and chips. They also have a Half Spring and Full Spring Chicken Meal which is ideal for families.

We didn’t want to get stuck in traffic, so we got takeaway. The chicken was freshly fried on order and was still warm when we got home.
Our 2 pc chicken meal with rice (RM18.80, inclusive of drink) came in generous portions – the chicken was sizeable, and there was so much rice I actually couldn’t finish it.

As for the flavour, the chicken had a strong pepper / garlic taste, with juicy insides and a nice, even coating. It feels quite homely (like fried chicken that your grandma makes) and is pretty distinct from other fast food chains. The gravy was similarly quite peppery, but tasty.
PS: I’m not sure why more fast food chains in Malaysia (even the franchised ones) don’t serve fried chicken with gravy – it’s the perfect companion.
Boreno’s, imo, serves pretty good fried chicken and I can see why it’s such a hit in Sabah. The good news for fans is that there are plans to open more outlets in Peninsular Malaysia, so it’ll be more convenient to get your fried chicken fix.
