One of my go-to places for roast duck – Restoran Soon Lok in Bandar Puteri Puchong – relocated to a new spot recently. I know some people say the food is overrated, but I’ve been coming here for years, and have always found their roast duck and dai chow (stir-fried dishes) to be decent.

The fam and I had dinner at their new shop, which is just a couple of blocks away. It looks much brighter and cleaner, with more seats available as well as air-conditioning. The decor is definitely an improvement from their previous place, which was much more casual.

Since my fam members aren’t big fans of roast duck, we opted to get other items to share instead. Aside from roast meats, they also offer a variety of dishes such as seafood, pork, soups, vegetables, and more.

First up, a tofu dish cooked with abalone slices and vegetables. The tofu is first fried, so it has a crisp shell, but the insides remain silky smooth. The abalone is your typical canned variety, but the vegetables were crisp, and the oyster sauce was not overpowering.

We ordered two seafood dishes. First up was steamed clams and squid, served on giant heated platter. There was loads of garlic, spring onions, and chilli to neutralize the fishy odour of the seafood, but there wasn’t a need, as it was fresh. The soy sauce brought out the seafood’s natural sweetness.

Next up was my pick: chilli shrimps. They were also cooked with curry leaves to give it extra fragrance. The shrimps used were the smaller kind, with a crunchy texture. The sauce was done well and stir-fried so that there was a nice coating over each piece. Definitely a rice puller!

Last but not least, a deep fried pork dish that I forgot the name of lol. It had generous slices of onion in a peppery sauce, and was topped with cashews. The pork was not too greasy, and still retained juiciness on the inside.
All in all, a satisfying family dinner at Soon Lok! There are lots of items to try on their menu; personally I would go for the roast duck, but don’t take my word for it because I’ve seen some harsh opinions on the net from more established food bloggers – it could be my personal taste. Prices are reasonable, and the food comes in generous portions.
