[Update]: Mama Kim has relocated to The Hex, Bandar Puchong Jaya.
When it comes to healthy food, there’s always a stereotype that it’s bland and tasteless since less salt, sugar, or seasoning is used. Naturally, I was a little apprehensive when my mum brought me to this cafe called Mama Kim in Bandar Puchong Jaya.
The cafe is tucked within an industrial area, surrounded by car factories and manufacturing plants. If you’re not familiar with the place, it might be easy to miss. Just look out for the brown building which houses a tranquil-looking spa next door and you’ll find Mama Kim.
Priding itself in serving healthy, balanced meals cooked with less salt, seasoning, starch, and MSG, Mama Kim offers items like Western food, noodles, rice, and hotpot dishes. Despite its somewhat hidden location, the place is very popular with the lunch crowd. By the time we got our food around 12pm, the place was packed to the brim with customers. Service was a tad slow – or maybe we were just hungry!
Mum and Bro had the Baked Cheesy Mushroom Rice (RM13.70), which was a bed of brown rice topped with broccoli, cauliflower, tomato, potatoes and oyster mushrooms baked and topped with a beautiful cheesy layer. I regretted not ordering this because it was really good. The mushrooms were moist and sealed underneath a melty layer of cheese, which was slightly hard on top but oozy at the bottom. The flavour was just right and not too salty.
My Seafood Cantonese Noodles (RM15.90), however, was a disappointment. While there was a lot of vegetables in it as well as some shrimp, mussel, tofu, crab meat sticks, and fish cakes, the broth was so bland it was like having noodles in water. The seafood was bland as well. Not my favourite dish of the day.
Price-wise, Mama Kim’s is typical of cafes and restaurants of this setting – worth the splurge when your inner health freak beckons.
