You know what’s better than a burger?
A smashed burger.
While regular patties are usually thick with a rare to medium-rare centre, smashed burgers feature loosely packed balls of ground beef that are ‘smashed’ onto the griddle to create thin patties. The high temperature from the grill, coupled with the pressure from the spatula or cast iron press, creates a nice, crunchy browning on the exterior of the patties, whilst sealing the meat’s savoury juices and flavours within.

While I’ve heard about smashed burgers, I never got to try them until recently at this stall called ShyGuy Burger in Plaza Crystalville, Cyberjaya. They’re very new, having opened just last month (January 2024) – but they’ve already built a significant fan base amongst Cyberjaya’s residents, thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations.

The menu is simple, but simple is all you need when you’re focused on creating good quality food. The single costs just RM9.50, and comes with a single beef patty (100gms++), fresh greens, pickles, special sauce, American cheese, and caramelised onions sandwiched between toasty burger buns. They also have the double , triple, and Four’s a Party (four single burgers in a set), with add-ons such as fried egg, beef bacon, and mac and cheese.

Sometimes there can be a wait if you’re walking in, so they have a Whatsapp order system where you can place your order and come pick it up when the food is ready. Else, you can rest on the stools that they have on-site.

Verdict: Possibly the best burgers at this price point that I’ve ever had, smashed or otherwise.
I liked it so much I went again the following week lol.
The American cheese they use has a sharp, smokey taste, and because they cook it together with the meat over the grill, it creates these deep, robust flavours thanks to the Maillard reactions. The patties are juicy and slightly chewy, while the outside is perfectly brown and crispy.
Another thing I really like is that they don’t ‘drown’ the burger in sauces. I find that many Malaysian vendors tend to overload the burgers with sauces, which destroys the flavour as everything would just taste like mayo/ketchup. With ShyGuy Burger, everything comes together as a cohesive whole – the fluffiness of the buns, the crispy/juicy combo of the meat, the sharp cheese, the sweetness of the onions and the slight acidity from the pickles.
So if you’re looking for a good smashed burger in Cyberjaya, give Shy Guy Burger a try!
