Our last meal in Penang was at a random place we saw while on our way to the Hin Bus Depot, called Ah Ma Pan Mee, along Tye Sin Street. We were attracted by the restaurant’s facade, which looks like the heritage buildings you find all around George Town. It turned out to be a pretty decent choice.

The interior is clean and spacious, with matching wooden flooring and seats paired with pictures of food on its walls. It was close to lunch hour but the place was pretty empty – not sure if it’s because its location is a bit further away from the town center.

As the name suggests, Ah Ma Pan Mee specializes in Pan Mee, which is prepared using a recipe from Pahang. While the ingredients are mostly similar to what you can get in standard pan mee (anchovies, sayur manis, shallots, mushrooms), the difference is in the noodles, which are thick and cylindrical in shape, as opposed to flat or thin. The noodles were al dente and had a nice texture, while the soup was flavourful.

I enjoyed my nam yu (fermented beancurd) pork rice, served with a fluffy omelette, brocolli, and a side of sambal. The meat was moreish, moist, with juices flowing out with each bite, and the pungent and umami flavour of the nam yu had permeated it well. I wish the rice had been cooked better though, as it was slightly undercooked. Would still give it a 7.5/10.

Washing down the meal with our last glass of Hor Ka Sai in Penang! I’ve come to really enjoy this chocolate and coffee mix.
Overall, Ah Ma delivers decent food, offering noodles and rice dishes that are tasty and filling. Prices are similar to what you get at higher-end kopitiams and cafes in KL. They also have branches in Bukit Mertajam, Bayan Baru, and Simpang Ampat, all in Penang.
