It’s rainy season here in Malaysia. What better time than now to tuck into steamy hot and comforting hotpot?
One of my frequent haunts whenever I crave hotpot is at Sukishi Japanese Buffet, IOI Mall Puchong. Although they don’t have a wide variety of items, the very affordable price tag of less than RM40 per pax is worth it. Especially if you like meat: they have a free flow of chicken, beef, pork and lamb.
Unlike some places which will try to slice the meat so thinly they’re almost transclucent, Sukishi doesn’t skimp. The meats are nicely cut, just right for cooking. Stuff is fresh too.
Pork with a nice layer of fat. Look at that marbling.
If you’ve never tried hotpot, I recommend breaking an egg raw into a bowl, then dipping your piping hot cooked meat into it just before you pop it into your mouth. It gives it an eggy, smooth finish.
They give you a choice of two soups – C & I went for spicy (left – which was really spicy!) and miso (clear broth, which is tasteless on its own but gets flavour from whatever you boil).
Feel free to grab stuff like seafood, sausage links, pork balls, mushrooms, cheese-filled seafood tofu (one of my faves!) and the like to be added to your soup.
They also serve a small selection of sushi, but not much. Still, for Rm40 (dinner), it’s a steal!
Of course, no meal would be complete without dessert, and Sukishi has chocolate and green tea ice cream which you can top with nata de coco, chocolate sprinkles, nuts and jelly.
I’d say Sukishi will remain one of my favourite hotpot places in the neighbourhood.. until they open a better one. 😛
