Everyone knows that Kajang is famous for its satay. But did you know that you can also visit a rustic pineapple farm, just 20 minutes from the town centre?

Tucked on a hilly slope within the historic Malay village of Kampung Sungai Merab, Saudagar Nanas Agrofarm is a small, family-owned farm that doubles as an agrotourism destination. It’s a popular weekend spot, especially in the mornings, with crowds flocking to its in-house cafe to enjoy a mix of pineapple-based products and local/fusion dishes.

The road up to the farm is a narrow and bumpy dirt track that only accommodates one vehicle at a time, so if you’re driving and worried about dents or dings, bring your *least* favourite vehicle lol.
As you head up, you’ll pass by fields of pineapple plants with their distinctive, sword-like leaves, neatly laid out in rows. These are mostly premium local pineapples from the MD2 variety, which is known for its natural sweetness and high juice content.

The cafe at the top comprises a few air-conditioned cabins for those who want to dine in comfort, as well as open-air seating with nice views of the towns of Kajang and Bangi below. The ambience is laid back and calming, especially with the three bantam chickens running around (they seem very used to humans) – it almost makes you forget that you’re still very close to the city.

So what’s available at the cafe? You can get pineapple fruits from just RM6/kg. I don’t usually eat pineapple (bad experiences at the fruit stall where the uncle would say “Very sweet one! Trust me!”and it would turn out sour) – but true to the farm’s promise, the ones sold here are sweet and juicy, with just the slightest hint of tanginess.
We bought two pieces, which came up to RM13 – a very reasonable price. You can get the staff to slice them up and pack them in a box for an additional RM2. If you’d like to try your hand at planting your own pineapples, the seeds go for RM2 each.
Trivia: Pineapples thrive in hot and humid weather, making Malaysia the perfect place to cultivate them. The pineapple industry is, in fact, one of our country’s most lucrative agri-food products, valued at over RM1bil. We make enough to fulfill local demand and even export to regions such as China, the Middle East, and Japan.

Nothing like a cold, refreshing bottle of sweet pineapple juice to cool down from the sweltering heat.

Other pineapple products on sale include tarts, pastries, cupcakes, and even coffee and sambal. If you’re dining in, you can try the nasi lemak served with pineapple sambal!

You can wander around parts of the grounds, where there are a couple of shaded gardens with decorative tropical plants belonging to the same genus as the pineapple. There is also a mini museum with newspaper clippings, and a small product display shelf featuring items made from pineapple leaves and other parts of the plant, such as bags, baskets, shoes, and beauty products.

If you like pineapples and are looking for a unique place to go over the weekend that isn’t an air-conditioned mall, Saudagar Nanas Agrofarm is a good spot to visit with chill, kampung-esque vibes. Entry is free. For school excursions, bookings can be made on their website at https://saudagarnanas.com.my/.
**Tip: Come early in the morning to beat the heat. Else, bring a hat / umbrella and sunglasses, and slather on sunscreen.
