What if you could have a quick beach “getaway’ – where you can lounge on deck chairs underneath umbrellas and dig your toes into the sand – smackdab in the middle of the city? Enter Plage Kitchen & Bar, a new beach-themed restaurant located at Pinnacle Sri Petaling Mall.

I stumbled on this place while looking for lunch, since it’s close to my office. The shopfront looks classy and intriguing, with some cacti lining the entrance and there’s a pebbled path leading into the dining area surrounded by mirrors. The effect feels like you’re walking through a ‘portal’ into a far away beach club!

Once inside, you’ll find a Mediterranean-inspired space with white columns, a large screen displaying a beachside scene, more cacti, and overhead lights made to look like the sky, which cast everything in a bluish light. A cosy bar is nestled in a corner of the resto.

The outdoor dining area is an Instagrammer’s paradise, especially the large central column ringed by concentric circles of sheer fabric. They’ve also placed actual sand around some areas, complete with beach chairs and tropical umbrellas. Everything is beautifully designed and gives you the illusion of being at a beachside bar, if you can ignore the sounds of honking traffic emanating from the commercial lots nearby.

Plage offers an extensive menu of local, Western, and fusion dishes – everything from Laksa, Char Kuey Teow and Nasi Percik, to pastas and ochazukes. I went for the Crab Fried Rice because it has been ages since I last had crab. The portion was generous and enough for two small eaters, with the rice covered in an eggy blanket and topped with huge chunks of crab meat. The egg had a beautiful, fluffy texture, and it felt satisfying to bite into a mouthful ofcrab meat without the tedious chore of having to crack the shell open. Unfortunately, the rice was undercooked; otherwise this would have been a great meal.

Plage’s ambience is unique and I think many patrons will enjoy the opportunity to pretend that they’re on a getaway, right in the heart of the city. Be prepared to shell out (no pun intended) slightly higher prices, as most mains range from RM20 – RM40.
