Vintage and second-hand stores are such fun places to visit, because you never know what rare and unusual gems you might unearth!

Such is the case at The Vintage & Route 66, a vintage goods supplier nestled within an industrial area in Klang. I saw their ad on Instagram (good use of the soc-med budget!) and it looked so intriguing that the Hubs and I drove for an hour just to check out the place over the weekend. We were not disappointed, as the place was packed with many interesting items and rare collectibles, from toys and furniture to kitchenware and second-hand clothing.

Since their primary business is as a supplier, you have to make a booking if you’re coming on a weekday, and there’s a minimum spend of RM100. On Saturdays and Sundays, you are free to walk in with no minimum spend.

The warehouse runs a long way back, comprising the ground floor and a mezzanine floor. At the entrance, you’ll be greeted by an enormous pile of clothes with each item going for just a ringgit or two, a life-sized model vehicle stacked with assorted toy passengers, and a wall of denim jeans / tie-dye shirts.

True to the establishment’s Route 66 name, there’s an element of vintage Americana to the interiors, with the Stars and Stripes fluttering overhead plus acoustic guitars lining the walls alongside fur pelts. To avoid untoward accidents and theft, you have to store your bags in designated lockers before entering the premises proper.

If you’re a toy collector, this could very well be collectors heaven! The long stretch of cabinets on one side of the warehouse features an extensive collection of popular anime and manga collectibles, both new and older titles, and discontinued American superhero action figures like Spawn (that’s one I haven’t seen in a long time! Loved the series). They even have old Hotwheels sets and Tamagochi.

At the back of the warehouse are sections dedicated to home and living, so you’ll find furniture, tableware, kitchenware, and all sorts of knickknacks here – including a mini samurai armour display. Shelves here were mostly stocked with interesting objets d’art, from crystal vases and music boxes to glass clocks and turkish lamps.

Some of the rattan furniture looked as good as new. These things were mostly built to last, unlike many modern products.

Many of the old wooden cupboards and tables needed some fixing up, but if you’re handy at restoring furniture, this corner could yield some great treasures at cheaper than usual prices.

I remember sliding glass cabinets from when I was a kid – they usually housed the dainty china or precious porcelain pieces that our parents / grandparents would only take out when there were special guests.

Ever since transitioning into auntie-dom, I have a newfound interest in ceramics and kitchenware. There’s a large selection of glasses, bowls, plates, and the like to choose from, sold either as individual units or in bulk per kilogramme. Ladies, if you’re looking to pukal some back home, this is an excellent spot! Lots of variety and beautiful pieces., and they look as good as new too.

Granted, this is a second hand store, so you sometimes get some pretty unusual items – like these random printed plates of the Japanese National football team from 1997.

After making our rounds downstairs, we moved up to the mezzanine floor, which is dedicated to second hand clothing. The jeans pile is the only ‘messy’ area here – the rest of the floor is actually neatly organised according to men’s and women’s clothing and by colour. Everything still looks in good or fair condition, although some items can have minor defects. They’re all quite cheap too, with some going from as little as RM5. You’ll have to hunt for the right sizes, but that’s the beauty of 2nd hand shopping.
