Established in Telawi, Bangsar during the height of the pandemic in 2020, Phil’s Pizza is still going strong four years later at a new home in Background, REX KL, where they dish out New-York style pizzas whilst regularly collaborating with local creatives for unique seasonal campaigns.

It’s hard to miss the store – just look for the bright orange walls and retro black-and-white signages that proudly proclaim the menu items on offer.

True to the New York style, pizzas at Phil’s are larger than usual, with a thin, hand-tossed crust, and they are sold by the slice. They offer crowd favourites like beef pepperoni, classic (plain cheese) and Margherita, as well as more unique takes like Truffle, pineapple (I’m team pineapple by the way!), and Meat la Pinyo (minced beef). The pizza isn’t done fresh to order, but it goes through the oven again, so it’s still served piping hot with gooey, melty toppings.

N went with his programmed default, the pepperoni, while I tried the truffle. Both were good, with a light, crispy crust that had just the right amount of gooey, stretchy cheese on top.

Of course, I had no illusions that for RM13, I’d get real truffles. In spite of this, Phil’s truffle pizza actually tastes decent. Purists will probably lambast me for liking truffle oil, but hey – if it tastes good, why not?

**PS: Phil’s Pizza does not sell alcohol. We got the beer from a Connor’s event which was happening at REX KL during our visit.
