[Update]: The restaurant has been rebranded to Farmer & Chef Hotpot, now serving claypot steamboat dishes.

Sky-Dome Hotpot has been on my list of places to try ever since I saw it featured on a few food channels here pre-pandemic. And what better occasion to do so than when H invited P and I to celebrate our birthdays?

Located on Level 13 of Wisma Trak, Chan Sow Lin, Sky-Dome Hotpot, as its name suggests, features a futuristic design with dome-like structures on an open-air terrace, each boasting clear glass windows that offer stunning views of the Kuala Lumpur city skyline.

H had booked a table inside the main dome (they also have smaller domes for private functions). It was nicely decorated, with multi-coloured lanterns floating from the ceiling for the Mid-Autumn festival. With the transparent glass above us, the lanterns resembled ‘planets’ underneath the night sky.

We came on a Saturday, which is usually peak time for the restaurant – but perhaps due to the rain, it was quite empty. Service was prompt and friendly.

The buffet has a base price of RM59.90, which includes one choice of soup, one complimentary bowl of fried rice or noodles, and a dessert. You can upgrade to different soups (they will give you a half and half pot) for an additional fee. Condiments and sauces (garlic, chilli, and other dips) are separate and will incur a RM5.90 charge per pax. For every two pax dining in, you’ll also get a complimentary ‘premium’ dish of meat of lamb/beef.

On the recommendation of the wait staff, we went for the Beauty Pork Soup, which is collagen rich and gives you that lipsmacking goodness. It also comes with a cup of Chinese wine which you can pour in for extra oomph once the soup boils.

The buffet selection is pretty mind-boggling. There are literally over a 100 choices on the menu, from fresh vegetables and ingredients such as pumpkin, yam, and corn which help to impart a natural sweetness to the soup; to seafood items like scallop, shrimp, tiger prawns, clams, mussels, and more. They’re not tiny portions either, as you can see from the size of the prawns/scallop in the picture above.

Our meat items included different cuts of pork such as pork belly, pork shoulder, as well as innards like liver and stomach. Poultry lovers are not left out as you can choose to get chicken and smoked duck too. Meats are sliced thinly so they can cook faster. Then there’s the usual processed food like fishballs, lobster balls, meatballs, etc.

All of the items were fresh and tasty. I especially like the prawns – it’s not every day one gets to enjoy prawns of this size to the heart’s content (!)

The fried rice was decent, imparted with wok hei. We only got two of these even though we could have one each, but I was worried we wouldn’ t be able to finish the food.

It has been awhile since the three of us had a catch up sesh, and I enjoyed it so much I kind of forgot to take more pictures lol. At the end of the meal, we got our desserts (old-school durian ais krim potong which brought out the nostalgia), and H ‘surprised’ us with a cake! Granted, her whispering with the staff kind of gave it away, but it was a wonderful gesture anyway 😛

Sky-Dome Hotpot has, in my opinion, one of the best value hotpots in KL, considering the location, the resto’s ambience, and the wide variety of items they have on their menu. The ingredients are quality, especially the seafood. Will definitely be returning some day for another celebration!

PS: View from the balcony outside the dome. The rain had cleared by then, giving us a beautiful view of KL and its bright lights.
