The Big Bad Wolf Sales started out in 2009 with 120,000 books for sale at very, very discounted prices. It’s kinda like Black Friday sales in the US… except less rowdy and we don’t trample on people. The BBW (not to be mistaken for another term…) sales is where books go for up to 95% off. Books that usually cost RM40 go for RM8. For book lovers, to miss out on this would be akin to sin. They also coined it the biggest book sale in the world.
This year, there is a WHOPPING 3 MILLION books on sale, and 230 hours of NON-STOP shopping. Yep, the party never stops from Dec 6 to 15 at the Mines International Convention Centre in Seri Kembangan. I was rather surprised at the massive crowd that turned up (and subsequently got stuck in the jam going out of the place for an hour, but it was worth it), which proves that Malaysians are actually reading a lot.
I also recently found out BBW is founded by the executive director of Book XCEss, my favourite bookstore and where I usually get my book supplies when there isn’t a book sale, coz they sell new books for only a fraction of the price. Don’t ask me how they make a profit when other places are selling four times the price, I don’t know either. And am not complaining, as long as there’s cheap books!
From fiction to non-fiction, cookbooks, activity books for children, graphic novels, manga… all the books you will ever need under one roof. If you’re tired from browsing, simply pop over to the cafe and have a rest. They also have a row of automatic massage chairs for people to unwind before resuming their book grabbing.
I had to park really far away and in a dodgy looking basement that had me walking through an abandoned section of the mall in the darkness carrying two huge plastic bags of over 20 books. The lengths I go to for my reading. x:
I actually regretted not bringing my own luggage bag, like how some people did. I couldn’t carry that much because I was alone. I would’ve gotten more if I had more space. It was a great workout carrying those books and walking more than a kilometre: kinda like weight lifting.
I had to give away some of my old books because I simply have no space for it. 😡
I think I’ve transitioned in terms of the material I read. I used to read lots of fantasy novels, and even some kiddier ones like Attica. These days I find myself more into historical fiction, war-time stories and biographies. I’ve never liked chic-lit and I don’t think I would ever be a fan.
Well, this will keep me happy for a couple of months, until I get the itch to go shopping for books again.
Anyway, taking my laptop to fix tomorrow coz it’s been overheating and I don’t want my motherboard to melt.
