An owl-themed cafe sounds as hipster as it gets; and the funny thing is that it was my mum who told me about the place (I thought I was the hip one around here!). Tucked inside the spacious Calvary Convention Center in Bukit Jalil, New Chapter by The Owls Cafe is actually their second cafe – and is wildly popular by the looks of the crowd there on a Sunday afternoon.
With clear glass windows to allow for lots of natural light, the place seemed modern but cosy, with wooden counters, chairs and tables that were paired off with clean white walls and ceiling lights. True to their owl theme, loads of owlish paraphernalia sat on the shelves and decorated plates and cups.
Even the door handles are a pair of owls!
Pillows at the waiting area with colourful owl designs.
There was a long waiting list, so took more photos while waiting for a seat.
Packed coffee beans, for you coffee lovers out there who’d like to take the blends home.
Once seated, a waiter took our orders and keyed them in through a smartphone system.
PS: If you’re looking for a quiet place to chill with your laptop/read, New Chapter is not for you. The place was really crowded and so noisy I was almost shouting just to speak to my parents at the same table lol.
Moo and Pi had Lemongrass/Ginger tea and Peppermint tea (RM8 each). The cups were adorable! Moo really liked her tea, which was refillable. You can also opt for a pot for two (RM12).
We ordered the Morning Daisy (RM18) : 180C oven-baked buttery flavoured Crispy Croissant with scrambled egg, salad and crinkle-cut fries.
Our eyes nearly popped out when the dish came to our table. It. Was. Hugeee. There was a mountain of soft and fluffy scrambled egg, and a generous serving of crispy, deep-fried crinkle-cut fries. I liked that they served this instead of regular fries, as you can taste that smokey flavour from having the skin left on! 🙂 The salad was also crunchy, fresh and tossed in a creamy sesame + vinegar dressing.
The best way to eat is to stuff the buttery croissant with some egg and salad, then munch on it like a sandwich; or spread the egg on the crispy fries for a beautiful blend of textures. Egg was slightly bland, but otherwise I’d give this a 9/10. Very yummy and value for money – we shared it among the three of us.
Ending the meal on a sweet note, we had the Classic (RM10) – a flower-shaped waffle served with a fat dollop of butter and syrup, dusted over with sugar. Although simple, it was fluffy, light and perfectly done. The butter was creamy and rich, while the syrup was not overly sweet. No wonder the place is famous for their waffles! They also have items like Rebecca (which comes with strawberries, blueberries, etc) and David (bananas, peanut butter, vanilla ice cream).
Overall, I was impressed with the food quality at New Chapters. Service was okay; pretty fast and efficient considering that there was a constant line. Ambience-wise, it’s not a cafe where you can chill and hang out for hours due to the high volume of customers, and the acoustics are bad because it gets so noisy you feel like you’re in a club. But I’d come back for the food! 🙂

Maybe you could go earlier in the morning or on weekdays? It was a weekend afternoon so the place was packed. The food there is good though 🙂
