Floria Putrajaya is a yearly event organised in Malaysia’s administrative capital of Putrajaya: an impressive, inaugural flower show where visitors get to see thousands of blooms. But one of the highlights of the whole event is definitely the Magic of the Night Show. It’s the float parade where floats representing various states around Malaysia cruise down gently through the Putrajaya man-made lake in a glorious spectacle of neon colours and decorations amidst the still, dark night.

I was assigned to cover this for the news desk, and boy oh boy I had to rush it coz it had to be in by 9pm and I needed to interview some people there ASAP. I was poking the entire story on my smartphone, trying to manage with my huge sausage fingers on the screen. It was hot and crowded with visitors, but the float views made up for it! The entire show, which featured 12 floats, took about an hour to finish.

The only international entry was the float from Suzhou, China; decorated with beautiful Chinese-style gazebos, an arch, pandas (you can’t see them here but they’re somewhere on the float) and Chinese natural landscape. It was one of my favourite floats coz of the pretty deco.

Perak’s float features some of it’s prominent places of visit, including the Zoo Taiping/Night Safari and the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan.

Then there was Johor’s. I do not know why they have Barney in it.

Putrajaya, being the host, had an impressive float, with animatronic butterflies and actual people wearing butterfly costumes on board, waving to the crowd. The hot air balloon ofc, represents the hot air balloon festival the city hosts every year.

Sabah’s one was really pretty as well, featuring a male proboscis monkey with all it’s ‘wives’ on a branch, the largest flower on Earth the Rafflesia, which are all flora and fauna unique to the state.

Terengganu’s float, led by a turtle, as the state is famous for turtle landings on it’s beach. (Sadly, these days the number has decreased due to pollution/overfishing/egg hunting).

Last but not least, the capital: Kuala Lumpur! Being the fashion hub, the float is represented by a giant high heel shoe and shopping bags, and the iconic twin towers.

Had a good time at the assignment. Work + Play is the best.
