Strangers at 47, SS17 Petaling Jaya – Sweet and Savoury Crepes


Living in the Klang Valley, there are plenty of cool and chic cafes to check out every other week. But competition is pretty fierce, and if you don’t have something to draw in the crowds (like good food, impeccable service and an Instagrammable interior), you’re likely to fold just as quickly as you set up shop.

Strangers at 47, though, has been a long-time stalwart on the cafe scene. As one of the pioneers in the SS17 area, the shop has a stable fanbase, who come for their delicious crepes, and it has even expanded from a single shop lot to include two adjacent spaces, providing diners with a comfortable and more spacious dining experience.

My last visit here was in 2015. Yes, I am aware that it was 6 years ago lol. The signature mural of a fox and a bear upon entering the restaurant is still there.
Although the space is much bigger now, the theme has not changed much, and still features a minimalistic look, with communal-style long tables for larger groups, cosy booths, wooden tables and warm yellow lights.

Stringent SOPs are in place before customers are allowed to enter the shop for dine-in. At the entrance, aside from scanning your temperature and registering yourself via MySejahtera, a staff member will also explain the house rules, such as wearing masks while moving around the cafe (except when you’re eating/drinking). You are also allowed to stay for a maximum of 1.5 hours only. It’s a good thing we came early, as the line started building up after 11.30am.


For hygiene purposes, there are no printed menus. Diners scan a digital menu using a QR code scanner.

My Hot Cappucino (RM11) was nice and milky, but not too sweet.


The Moomins is trying to eat less meat these days, so we ordered Lethal Shrooms (RM19.50); one of the cafe’s signatures that has been on the menu since they opened. An assortment of sauteed mushrooms such as portobello, shimeji and baby king oysters mushrooms, plus sauteed baby spinach and caramelised onions are wrapped in a thin savoury crepe, then topped with tomato relish, poached egg and a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I recommend ordering this if you’re not sure what to order; it never fails to disappoint.


If seafood is more your thing, there’s Miss Dory (RM22.50), comprising breaded and deep fried to golden perfection fish fillet, battered squid, citrus-cucumber onion salad, potato pumpkin mash, roasted cherry tomatoes and homemade sriracha mayo lime. All the flavours and textures — the crunchy from the fish and squid, the soft and smooth pumpkin mash plus the tangy cherry tomatoes and mayo lime — come together wonderfully.

Aside from savoury crepes, Strangers at 47 has a selection of sweet crepes as well. Unfortunately we were too stuffed to order any.

The cafe offers cakes too. The Cendolier Cheesecake (RM14.50 per slice) is a house specialty. You can also take home homemade kimchi, kaya and homebrewed kombucha.

Service here is excellent, albeit a little slow as the crepes are made to order. If you’re here over the weekend, come early to avoid the crowd, or be prepared for a wait.

Strangers at 47 (Again)

Did you get the pun? Lol.

I had Sunday off and Mum was craving for some crepes, so we drove to Strangers at 47 at SS17, PJ.

Strangers serves a limited but tasty selection of sweet and savoury crepes. It was raining so there weren’t many customers, but it’s usually packed to the brim on weekends.


We ordered three savoury crepes to share among us. Ofc, I couldn’t miss out on having my all-time favourite – the Lethal Shrooms. Stuffed into the fluffy, light crepe skin is portobello, shimeji, baby king oyster mushrooms along with soft cooked spinach and caramelised onions. It is then topped off with refreshing tomato relish, an appetising balsamic vinaigrette and perfectly poached egg. Despite coming here a couple of times, the quality has been consistent, so that’s a good thing!


We also tried two new crepes. This one is the BBC, or Big Breakfast Crepe – your typical breakfast fare. There’s a fried egg with runny yolk, crepe, hash brown, ham slices, chicken chorizo, beans and stir fried spinach, mushrooms and chilli. While it tasted good, it wasn’t particularly special or value for money (RM23). I can get a bigger, better breakfast meal at Red Beanbag for nearly the same price.


Another crepe that I had for the first time was Miss Dory (RM20) featuring a large, thick-cut breaded fish fillet and tangy sriracha lime mayo, crunchy squid, vegetable salad, roasted cherry tomatoes and to add a contrasting texture to all that crisp, a potato pumpkin mash. The sour, tangy flavour was very appetising and the fish had soft and melt-in-your-mouth flesh.


To top off our meal, we had a sweet crepe called Purple Rage.(RM9) – made with purple Japanese sweet potato, coconut sago and palm sugar. The combi of flavours is really good, especially the palm sugar which tastes like thickened caramel.

The sweet crepes are half the price of the savoury ones and are quite small in portions –  between the three of us, we each had just one bite to taste.


One thing I don’t like about coming here is the awfully long waiting time. Even though there weren’t a lot of customers, our order still took close to 40mins to arrive – I guess they’re short on manpower. The staff and owners are all very nice and friendly, but gosh, I wouldn’t want to come here during peak time and wait for two whole hours for a meal.

I. Love. Crepes. I like how versatile they are, how they can be either sweet or savoury depending on how you pair it, and how simple yet delicious it is.

Strangers at 47 is a cafe in SS17, PJ, which specialises in.. guess what? Crepes! They have both sweet and savoury flavours to satisfy every palette. Tucked in a quiet corner of a suburban neighbourhood’s commercial area, the place is perfect for a chill session or hangout with friends. The name, according to it’s owner/chef Sean Ooi comes from his desire to have a place where ‘strangers’ can meet up, bond over food and forge new relationships.

So how’s the food here?

I have to say it’s one of the most excellent places I’ve been to. Almost every dish that I tried was superbly prepared with fresh ingredients paired perfectly. Nothing is overdone – its simplicity is what makes it so yummy.


My favourite was the Lethal shrooms  – with portobello, shimeji, baby king oyster mushrooms, spinach and caramelised onion stuffed into a lightly herbed crepe, topped with tomato relish, poached egg and balsamic reduction. At first glance, the balsamic reduction resembled chocolate drizzle so I was a little confused, lol. The egg was done perfectly and when cut open, drenched the crepe with golden yellow yolky goodness. The moist, juicy mushrooms were also cooked just right, the soft texture contrasting with the crunchy onions. One of the best crepes that I’ve tried – I highly recommend it to hobbits, people who love shrooms, or just anyone who is visiting this place in general.

Crepes are usually thought of as light snacks, but this was filling enough to be a meal on its own.


The interior is decorated with wooden tables and cinder-toned walls accentuated by soft white lights,  giving it a cosy feel.


I had the matcha latte. Foamy, milky and with a thick green tea taste, this was a winner in my books. The drinks are prepared by Sean’s girlfriend and she also mans the counter. It’s quite amazing how these young entrepreneurs run the place – everyone has a role to play, so the cafe runs efficiently. Kudos! (PS: Not everyone likes green tea, so for those who prefer something more conventional, they also have coffee and chocolate).


Moving on.. more savoury crepes! ‘A Hen’s Crush’ has pan-seared chicken, sweet capsicum, golden hash brown, citrus-cucumber-onion salad and house made tangy sauce in a chilli-flaked crepe. Despite the spices, the hot factor on this one is not very high. I guess the chilli is just for an extra kick. While I don’t like veggies on their own, when paired with the juicy, meaty chicken, it came together well as a whole. I like how they left the skin on so it was slightly crispy on the outside. Another thumbs up!


Last but not least of the savoury crepes was ‘Shore to Please’  – a marriage between Eastern and Western ingredients and cooking styles. The shrimp is marinated Cajun style with salted egg yolk (a common Chinese seafood pairing), cooked with battered squid, spinach, caramelised onions and roasted cherry tomatoes. Squid and shrimp, my two favourite seafood in the world? Bring it on! The squid was particularly lovely – so fresh and springy to the bite.The shrimp was slightly overdone but well-flavoured with spices.

Okay, you know what? Just get everything on the menu because they’re all good. Lol.


Sweet-tooths, rejoice. You have found your dream desserts. The sweet crepes served here are equally good in terms of flavour and ingredients. For those who like Asian ingredients, go for the Purple Rage – a sweet potato crepe filled to the brim with creamy Japanese sweet potato, coconut sago and pandan-infused gula melaka (palm sugar).The flavour is subtly sweet without being overpowering, and you can really taste the natural sweetness of the ube.


My favourite (well I’m biased because I like chocolate over anything else) is the quirkily named Dark Side – chocolate crepe, dark chocolate spread, white chocolate curls, orange caramel topped with vanilla ice-cream. The orange caramel gives it a slightly fruity tang that goes well with the creamy chocolate and vanilla. The chocolate spread was love. You know how some places have ‘faux’ chocolate that is mostly sugar and chocolate flavouring? Not so here. The spread was rich and creamy with dark chocolate. And again, not too sweet and made just right. Wow.


For snacks, try these seriously addictive sweet potato fries. They’re like regular fries, but sweet. Dunk them in tomato sauce for a sweet-savoury mindblowing experience.

The service here is super friendly, true to their spirit of being a ‘neighborhood cafe’that aims to make patrons feel at home. I highly recommend this place for the food, ambience and the nice people running it. What are you waiting for? Go grab some crepes 🙂

But on the bright side, shopping for shoes tomorrow at Times Square.
Went to KLCC after class today to watch Marley and Me. It’s sort of a chic flick. I don’t usually watch comedies or romantic films. I prefer fantasy, action and zombies 🙂 But the movie was okay la I guess.
The show ended at 1.20PM and we got to the LRT at 1.40pm. Late! We rushed back to college only to find that…
So we sat there sweating buckets and when nobody turned up we just left. -_-” It has been happening regularly, since the school keeps adding buildings but not increasing the voltage capacity…

How to make crepes. It’s easy.  First weigh 100 gms of flour. Add 1/4 tsp baking powder.Then pour out 150ml of milk.

Beat two eggs lightly.


Mix everything together. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and keep beating until it is lump free and smooth with no air bubbles. Set aside for half an hour.
Use a little corn oil/cooking oil to grease the pan, then use ladle to transfer the batter in small amounts to the frying pan. Swirl it around to make a flat round shape like a pancake. Fry at low heat til golden brown and crispy. Leave to cool.
I think I made a good seven pieces from my batter. 🙂


Add a scoop of ice-cream.


Fold it up and enjoy ! 🙂 Crepes with vanilla ice cream is done !
Actually the recipe included jam, but I didn’t have any at home so just improvise la. Can add honey, chocolate, peanut butter , chopped fruits with ice cream, basically anything you want.
Great for tea time, and it’s easy to make plus filling.
