There are plenty of boba spots in Bukit Bintang, but if there’s one you should try, it’s Sugar Mummy Boba. Hidden in a nondescript alley between Lot 10 and Fahrenheit 88, the kiosk might be easy to miss, so just look out for the signboard with “Optimism + Coffee” just outside the alley.
The store combines two concepts, namely Sugar Mummy Boba and Optimist Coffee. Both brands are the brainchild of Trev Ng, a former PR practitioner who wanted to create an F&B concept to spread positivity and good vibes. You can see these from the little touches at the shop, from quirky labels on their bottles to inspiring quotes.
The menu for the coffee kiosk covers the basics, so forget fancy schmancy drinks like ice blended tropical whatever. Sugar Mommy Boba serves only three beverages, ie the traditional Boba Milk Tea, Boba Fresh Milk and Boba Latte, which pairs tapioca pearls with coffee.
The brand has a cheeky logo – inspired by the loud and boisterous landlady from Stephen Chow’s Kungfu Hustle.
Ordered a Boba Fresh Milk. The portion is smaller than your run-of-the-mill boba joints, but it’s good coz you get your sugar fix without overindulging. I like that they caramelise the brown sugar on top with a torch, and there’s a layer of cheese just underneath which gives it a great balance of salty and sweet. The pearls are nice and chewy as well.
Sugar Mummy Boba KL is located at SE1 Ground Floor Lot 10 Shopping Centre, 50, Jalan Sultan Ismail, 50250 Kuala Lumpur. Opening hours are from 12PM – 10PM (daily). They also have branches in Sri Petaling, Setapak and Damansara Uptown.
