Hey, guys! It’s Day 16 of the Movement Control Order here in Malaysia. Can’t believe it’s already been two weeks – and there are still two more weeks left to go. I wrote a post about my anxiety (which has been pretty severe the last couple of days), but decided not to post it because everyone has their own problems, and I don’t want to seem as if I’m whining. Writing it down helps though.
Anyway, I thought it’d be fun to do some Get to Know Me tag questions! I don’t write a lot about myself because I usually just post about food and travel – but now that I’m stuck at home, I’ve had to look around for other topics lol.
This one’s from Youtubesociety.com.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up, and am currently living in a city called Puchong in Malaysia. Back in the day, it was considered a ‘remote’ place with nothing but abandoned mining ponds, jungle, rubber and oil palm plantations. Today, it is a bustling city with a population close to half a million people. While it’s not exactly a financial hub, it has its own malls, financial towers, hotels, offices and retail. Puchong is notorious for its tolls and traffic jams, but having lived here for so long, one sort of gets used to it. We’re also famous for our hotpot restaurants, dim sum joints and illegal massage parlours lol.
Who is your first best friend?
A boy in kindergarten. I don’t remember how to spell it, but it sounded something like Lee Herxu. (I tried googling it, no result lol.) I remember spending time together playing with him during recess, and he gave me a cute card with something like “best friends forever.” Of course, when you’re a kid, best friends last for all of one week. We went to different schools and that was that.
How tall are you?
160 cm (5’3).
Dogs or Cats?
Cats. Dogs are a little too needy for my liking.
Funniest moment throughout high school?
I did not have a great time in high school, but there were fun moments. The funniest would probably be when a friend of mine fell over while she was sitting on the railing at the bus stand. She had pretty strong legs, so she managed to hook them over the railing, but she didn’t have enough upper body strength to sit up, so she just sort of…dangled halfway over the railing. I could only help her up after like half a minute, because I was doubled over from laughing.
PS: We are still good friends after 16 years.
What year were you born?
- We’re closer now to 2040 than we are to 1990. Let that sink in.
Are you in/have you gone to college?
I attended college in Kuala Lumpur, majoring in Mass Communication (Journalism). I completed my degree in Journalism at Sheffield in the UK.
What is your favourite drink?
What is your spirit animal and why?
A horse. My Chinese horoscope is a horse, and like horses, I like running free. I hate being told what to do and being responsible for anyone other than myself. You do you. I do me. I suppose some people would call it selfish, lol.
You’re wearing perfume, what scent is it?
Sweet, floral scents, like vanilla, honey, peonies, roses, etc.
Tea or Coffee?
Nothing beats English tea with some scones and cream! But I won’t say no to a nice frothy latte either.
What are your life goals?
This is a question I still haven’t found the answer to. But I know one of it involves having a dozen fat cats.
What sports do you play or have you played?
I was a reserve on the high school basketball team for a couple of years. I also did Taekwondo (blue belt) before I suffered a back injury that prevented me from doing any strenuous sports. These days I keep active by walking.
Have any books you read changed your life?
Possibly my first Enid Blyton book – it set me on a lifelong path of being a bibliophile! It’s too bad I can’t recall the exact title now, but it had something to do with a boy and how much he loved eating treacle. I was five or six; I didn’t even know what treacle was, but it sounded delicious.
What is your favourite movie?
There are a few, actually. I like old action and sci-fi films like Predator, Alien, Jurassic Park and Terminator, as well as fantasy movies like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the Lord of the Rings series – I’ve watched them so many times I literally have lines memorised. I also like newer films about discovering one’s self, like Life of Pi, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Who are your favourite YouTubers?
I think I’m past the whole ‘favourite Youtuber’ thing. I follow a couple of channels, but these days I prefer watching content rather than following a specific creator. Still, I do subscribe to some food and travel channels like Mark Wiens and Mikey Chen.
How many languages do you speak and how well?
English is my first language. My Malay is good too, albeit a little rusty. I speak Cantonese at home, but very surface level – if I were to converse with someone from Hong Kong, for example, I’d say my vocab would probably only be around 70%. Ironically, despite being Chinese by ethnicity, my Mandarin is the weakest. I know the basics but I’d be useless when conversing with actual mainland Chinese lol.
Are you single or taken?
Officially signed, sealed, delivered two months ago.
What is your idea of your dream date?
A bucket of fried chicken and junk food while watching old action films.
How long was your longest relationship?
Five years. We were both 17 when we got together, 22 when we broke up. I don’t think it was anyone’s ‘fault’ – your teens / early 20s is just an age where you don’t know wtf you’re doing or what you want in life.
How would you describe your fashion sense?
Quirky. I still like all-black ensembles, a vestige of my emo days.
What is your go-to hairstyle?
I don’t think I have a hairstyle per se. I just have long hair and I try to keep it neat.
How many siblings do you have?
I have one younger brother.
What is your go-to fast food order?
You can never go wrong with fried chicken! The best is from A&W, but I wouldn’t say no to a Spicy Chicken McDeluxe from McDonald’s.
Do you use PC or a Mac?
A Mac for work, and a PC for personal use.
Your most memorable vacation memory?
I’ve had many memorable travel experiences, both for work as well as leisure. If I were to pick only one, however, it would be visiting the York Minster back in 2012. I was studying in uni, and a group of friends and I went on a weekend trip to York, one of England’s many medieval cities. The city itself was amazing, surrounded by stone ramparts and ancient structures, but the most majestic of all was the Minster; the largest building of its kind in Northern Europe. I’ve always had a fascination with history, and to be in a place that has endured for so many centuries was a moving experience in itself. I remember entering a large, expansive nave with magnificent archways – it was just like in the movies. A choir was having a performance just then, and the superb acoustics meant that their voices filled the hall as if they were on loudspeaker. I walked up to the choir screen at the front, which had sculptures of the kings of England, and was overwhelmed with emotion. I can’t explain why, but I just felt really blessed to be there.
What are your morning, evening routines?
Currently in a lockdown, so it’s pretty much the same every day – wake up around 9-ish, breakfast, work by 10, lunch at 1, more work / writing, evening exercise, dinner and play video games/ read at night.
Do you have any bad habits?
I can be a bit picky with food. If I MUST eat something I don’t like, I gobble it up as fast as I can because I just don’t like seeing it on my plate hahahaha.
Tell us one thing about you that we wouldn’t know?
I have a huge collection of beanies.
What is your favourite Netflix show?
I’m one of those people who don’t have Netflix. I just don’t have the patience to watch serials. But it means I’m often left out when people talk about Black Mirror or whatever’s popular these days. Tiger King?
Show us your songs tab on Spotify
I don’t listen to Spotify that much now that I’m stuck at home, because I can play my songs on Youtube. Been listening to a lot of Hope Tala and Khruangbin to help me chill.
What is the craziest thing you have done?
Fly to a foreign country to meet a stranger (who may or may not have been who he said he was). Well it all turned out well because we’re married now, lol. But it was still incredibly reckless and stupid, now that I think about it.
Describe your first crush
He had no nipples. Yes, I had a crush on Aladdin. Is that not allowed?
What theme parks have you been to?
I love theme parks! My highlight would be Disneyland in Paris, as well as Universal Studios Hollywood in LA. Closer to home, I’ve been to Genting Highlands (before it was closed), Sunway Lagoon, Berjaya Times Square, The Lost World of Tambun, and Universal Studios Singapore. I would someday like to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Florida.
What is your favourite genre of film and why?
Action. I just like to watch things explode.
What was your dream job as a kid?
I wanted to be a cartoonist.
What is your coffee order?
A caramel frappucino with whipped cream.
What is your favourite thing to order on UberEats?
Here in Malaysia we use GrabFood and FoodPanda, mostly. But I don’t order food delivery very often so I’m not even sure what they offer.
Have you moved from home, where to and how was the experience?
I still live at home with my parents rn because it’s cheaper and more convenient. Western cultures might find it weird but it’s actually quite the norm in Asian countries. I lived on my own while studying in the UK. It was awesome, and I can’t wait to get my own house so I can have my own personal space.
Have you ever failed at anything and what did you learn?
All of my additional mathematics (algebra) papers. Judging by how I took up a career in writing, I guess I learned that math is not for me.
How many countries have you travelled to?
About 17. In Southeast Asia, aside from my own country, I’ve been to Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. I’ve also been to Taiwan, Japan and Australia. After my studies in the UK, I had a graduation trip with my course mates to several European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Holland, Luxembourg, Italy and Switzerland. I’ve also been to the United States.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Oded Fehr. He played Ardeth Bay in The Mummy, and Carlos Olivera in Resident Evil.
Do you have any pets? Show them to us!
Unfortunately no. My mom hates animals and won’t let us keep any in the house. More reason to get my own place soon!
What are your pet peeves?
What do you do in your free time?
I try to read, but these days I waste my life away watching Youtube videos. Sigh.
Do you have any weird quirks?
I like peeling shrimp; I find it therapeutic.
What is your favourite colour?
Do you know your personality type? What is it?
I am an INTP (Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving traits), according to the Myers-Briggs test. Apparently INTP females are pretty rare, second only to INTJ females. Maybe that’s why I have no friends. 😀
Have you been to any concerts or Festivals? Which were the most memorable?
The Cranberries in Kuala Lumpur, back in 2012. I’m glad I was able to watch them live, before Dolores died.
What are your favourite values in friends?
I don’t really have a criteria for friends – I either click with you or I don’t.
What is one thing you wished people knew about you?
I’m not actually aloof – it’s just the resting bitch face.
What social media are you addicted to?
Blogging, obviously! I’m also on Instagram quite often – follow me! @erisc.mogol (shameless plug)
How do you get along with your family?
Right now, okay I guess. It’s not always smooth sailing.
What is the biggest struggle you overcame?
Just getting up and facing life can be a struggle sometimes. I try to take it one day at a time.
Who is your role model?
Buddha. I like his philosophies. Not necessarily the asceticism.
You are going out with friends, describe your night!
What friends? Lol. Kidding. Surprisingly, despite being extremely introverted, I do have a couple of friends. We usually just hang out at the movies or have coffee.
