When it comes to street food in Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor in the Bukit Bintang area is one of the most convenient places to get everything under one roof (or road!). The open-air dining street has a decidedly festive atmosphere, especially after dark – with dozens of stalls selling everything from Malay, Chinese and Indian to Thai, Cambodian, Western fare and more. Smoke wafts from charcoal grills set up along the pavement, waiters yell at passers-by while brandishing menus, there are street performers looking to earn a quick buck, buskers and salesmen peddling their wares.

Jalan Alor has a diverse crowd of tourists from all over the world with a healthy mix of locals.

N really wanted to try grilled sting ray, so we stopped at a resto called Meng Kee Grilled Fish Restaurant, which I’ve written about in a previous post. Instead of the chilli version, we opted for just plain grilled sting ray, which came with slightly charred edges. The fish was done well this time, with no overwhelmingly fishy taste, while the flesh was meaty and sweet.

The sambal bamboo clams were also fat and juicy; the spicy sauce gave it that extra kick.

Also got a plate of salted egg yolk squid, which was unexpectedly fresh and bouncy to the bite, coated over with a light and savoury egg yolk batter with a hint of sweetness. Curry leaves gave the dish extra fragrance.

For drinks, we got a starfruit drink which is hard to find these days. All in all I was satisfied with the food and service which was prompt and efficient. Price wise it is a bit on the high side, being a tourist place and all, but the two of us were well fed and watered at the end of the meal.

And of course I had to take him to try Wong Ah Wah‘s famous grilled chicken wings! But for some reason, the quality was poorer this time, not at all like when H and I bought 10 pieces and polished them all off in one go.

We didn’t manage to eat too many things in Jalan Alor coz we were stuffed by then, but I hope to make a list of top 10 things to try in another post. Til then! 🙂
