Mi was craving for Pan Mee over the weekend, so we went to this new place called Yummy Pan Mee at Taman Meranti Jaya, Puchong.
For those who don’t know, pan mee is a Malaysian Chinese dish, consisting of thick hand-kneaded flour noodles shaped into thin/thick strips or shredded and boiled in a vege/anchovy-base soup. It is then served in soup, or ‘dry’. The soup one usually has anchovies, fishballs/meatballs, Shiitake mushrooms and minced meat, while the dry one is tossed in a dark soy sauce. These days, more eateries are serving different versions, like ‘chilli’, curry, etc.
Canteen-style, no frills, with small tables and plastic chairs.
Cool green walls are plastered over with delicious images of food.
Three layered ice milk tea – thick, dark palm sugar on the bottom, tea and condensed milk on top. Sweet and creamy, it’s the perfect drink to quench your thirst on a hot day.
Mi’s traditional Pan Mee (dry). A smattering of plump Shiitake mushrooms, crispy fried anchovies and minced meat sit atop a bed of noodles tossed in dark sauce, with fried bits of lard for a smoother texture and added flavour.
I had the Chilli Pan Mee. Was a tad disappointed at its appearance – most places would have the noodles topped with a sunny side up egg. You break the yolk open and use that so that the noodles are smooth; but this had the same dark soy sauce as its traditional Dry Pan Mee version, which toned down the spiciness of the chilli flakes, and the egg was overcooked.
I’d give it a 6/10.
They also have lunch sets for only RM9.90! This includes rice/noodles. Bro had the chicken karaage (fried chicken), which came with rice, a smaller serving of soup pan mee and tofu.
Regretted not ordering this coz it was pretty good! The chicken was crunchy on the outside, well flavoured and tender on the inside.
