Known as a food paradise, the island of Penang is home to all sorts of amazing dishes, from Assam Laksa (CNN even rated it as the top 10 foods you have to try in Asia!) and char kuey teow to rojak and white curry. For those of us who crave Penang food but don’t want to take a four-hour drive up north, there’s a closer alternative: Penang One in Bandar Puteri, Puchong.
Humble-looking and comfy, the outlet’s design is minimal, with names of famous roads and their respective specialties decorating one side of the wall. But don’t let that fool you! There are loads of newspaper cuttings plastered on the walls as a testament to their food.
Iced milk tea.
Moo had some dumplings stuffed with shredded turnip, served with chilli dip. The skin was super gooey and soft, so she didn’t really enjoy them.
Almond milk tea.
Being used to the KL-version of curry mee, I was intrigued by the Penang version, which had cubes of pig blood and slices of woodear fungus. The blood cubes were spongy with an offal-ly taste – probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed soaking them into the soup. The curry tasted sweeter; creamy but a tad lighter than KL versions which tend to be heavy on coconut cream.
Noodle portion was quite small, but at least they put in lots of ingredients.
The shop is also famous for their duck’s egg Char Kuey Teow, Hokkien Mee and Duck Meat Kuew Teow Th’ng.

It’s great! The best ones are the ones cooked with enough ‘wok hei’ or a strong fire. Did you try it in Malaysia?
