Macau Pork Chop – Tai Lei Loi Kei, Puchong

What’s famous in Macau apart from almond cookies, old Portuguese buildings, casinos and an awesome nightlife?

Come on. It’s easy to guess…

Their pork chop buns, of course! Good news for people living closer to South East Asia, you don’t have to fly all the way there to chomp down on these delectable treats. :) The famous Tai Lei Loi Kei restaurant has recently opened a number of branches in Malaysia, the latest one being at IOI Boulevard in Puchong.

The restaurant is cosy and reminiscent of a ‘char charn teng’ (coffeeshop) in Hong Kong. I’m still not used to the way people just randomly sit next to each other at shops in HK. There’s not enough space in their cramped restaurants, but it still feels like an invasion of privacy to share your table with strangers.

Their signature dish is the pork chop bun, which comes in a simple patty wedged between two toasted buns. The special thing about Macau pork chop bun is the lack of sauces and condiments to go with it, but it tastes awesome just the same. I’ve had the original one when I visited Macau three years ago, and that taste still lingers in my mind *smacks lips*.

Didn’t feel in the mood for bread, so we ordered other stuff. I had Pork chop with noodles. The noodles are springy and bouncy to the bite, while the chop was tender, chewy and very well marinated. Still not as good as the one in Macau, but close! And it wasn’t that pricey either, only RM13.90 for a set that came with soft drinks.

Dad had pork chop rice with curry. The curry was good too.

Another notable thing to try is the Sawdust Cake Dessert (aka Serradura). It’s a chilled dessert made from sweetened vanilla whipped cream and crushed Marie biscuits, giving it a tiramisu-like layer. Awesomeness!
